For all of us at Sanctuary Yoga & Mindfulness, self care is not just something that we preach, but something that we actively practice as well. But like any “practice,” it takes different forms, and looks a little bit different all the time. As far as our physical asana goes, it is all too easy to work from an egocentric place, and fall into patterns of pushing ourselves as hard as we can every time we come to our mats. While we believe in hard work, in the lineage of yoga that we practice, it is important to find that balance between effort and ease. Yin Yoga can be a helpful tool in helping us find that harmony.
Yin Yoga is a slower more meditative approach to the asana practice in which the practitioner may hold postures for anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes. When held for these periods of time, the poses apply light to moderate stress to the connective tissues of the body, with the goal to increase flexibility in the joints and improve circulation to all areas of the body. A less physically strenuous practice, Yin encourages quality of breath and introspection for the practitioner.
The practice was originated in the late 1970’s by the famed teacher Paulie Zink. Intended not to be a complete practice in and of itself, it is more so designed as a compliment to more physical exercise. We especially find it helpful as a punctuating practice when maintaining a consistent dynamic yoga practice (as offered in our ‘Everyone’ classes).
For those who think they might benefit from this cooling practice during these hot summer months (let’s be real, most of us,) we are offering an ‘Introduction to Yin Yoga’ workshop on June 15th. Susannah, one of our lovely tribe teachers, will be providing students with an overview of the history of the practice, its’ roots in Chinese Philosophy, meridien and organ theory, as well as an hour long Yin practice. There are still spots available. We hope to see you there!!
