Getting Burnt Out


It is easy in the summertime to over extend ourselves. Days are long, social calendars are full. If we are not mindful, we can wear ourselves out meeting obligations. In order to avoid allowing self care and rest to fall by the wayside, we need to vigilantly create time for ourselves the same way we do for others. It hearkens to the Greek story of Icarus and Daedalus.


Icarus and his father Daedalus were Greek prisoners on the Island of Crete. Daedalus planned escape by constructing gigantic wings from the feathers of native birds. When Icarus donned the wings, Daedalus warned of complacency, as well as of hubris in escaping. Flying too low the wings could get wet from the waves and fall apart, too high and the wax holding the feathers together could melt and the wings would again fall apart. Icarus scoffed at his father’s warning, and flew ahead. Flapping enthusiastically, Icarus inevitably flew too high, the wax on the wings melted and he fell to his death.


Just as Daedalus warned Icarus, the danger of complacency is worth noting. It is important that we maintain our obligations to those that rely on us, however, we need to be clear on what is necessary and what is not. Just as Icarus flying too close to the sun led to his demise, burning ourselves out by overloading our schedules and making unrealistic itineraries is detrimental to our well being, body, spirit, and mind. Just as we cannot pour from an empty cup, we cannot be of the greatest service to those around us if we are not taking care of ourselves. What can you carve out this week that is soothing, cooling and rejuvenating for yourSELF in these heated “dog days” of summer?
